The National Energy Administration held a press conference on Thursday afternoon to release the development of renewable energy in 2022 and introduce the progress of improving the green electricity certificate system for renewable energy, the scale of new energy storage installations in China and the scale of transactions in the national electricity market.

  I. Establish a new energy storage industry management system initially

Over the past year and more, the National Energy Administration and the National Development and Reform Commission have issued a series of policies, including the Guiding Opinions on Accelerating the Development of New Energy Storage, the Implementation Plan for the Development of New Energy Storage in the 14th Five-Year Plan, the Specification for the Management of New Energy Storage Projects (Interim), and the Notice on Further Promoting the participation of New Energy Storage in the Power Market and the Dispatching and Operation. China has developed and built a national big data platform for new energy storage, initially established a national management system for the new energy storage industry, coordinated and promoted pilot and demonstration projects for new energy storage nationwide, and laid a foundation for innovative application of new energy storage technologies and high-quality development of the industry. At present, all provinces (autonomous regions, municipalities and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps) have carried out policy research on new energy storage development to varying degrees.

  2. New energy storage installations increased at a faster pace

According to data reported by provincial energy authorities, by the end of 2022, the installed capacity of new energy storage projects in China had reached 8.7 million kW, with an average storage time of about 2.1 hours, an increase of more than 110 percent over the end of 2021. Look at it by province. By the end of 2022, the top five provinces in terms of cumulative installed capacity were Shandong with 1.55 million kW, Ningxia with 900,000 kW, Guangdong with 710,000 kw, Hunan with 630,000 kw and Inner Mongolia with 590,000 kW. The top five provinces in terms of newly installed capacity in 2022 are Ningxia with 890,000 kW, Shandong with 890,000 kw, Hubei with 530,000 kw, Hunan with 500,000 kw and Inner Mongolia with 330,000 kW.

  3. lithium ion battery is the main component, and the diversified development trend of new energy storage technology is obvious

By the end of 2022, lithium-ion batteries accounted for 94.5 percent of China's newly installed energy storage capacity, compressed air 2.0 percent, liquid flow 1.6 percent, lead-acid (carbon) 1.7 percent, and other technologies 0.2 percent.

In terms of the proportion of newly installed technologies in 2022, lithium-ion battery energy storage technology accounts for 94.2%, which is still in an absolutely dominant position. Newly installed compressed air energy storage technology accounts for 3.4%, and liquid flow battery energy storage technology accounts for 2.3%, which significantly accelerates the growth rate. In addition, flywheel, gravity, sodium ion and other energy storage technologies have also entered the engineering demonstration stage.
